Why Learn the Viola? by Nor Nan

Out of all the instruments in the orchestra, the viola is possibly the hardest to learn. Generally speaking, it is a little known instrument and there are not many people who take an interest in learning to play it. It is also limited in its scope. It does not have the same range as the violin or the cello.

When we think about the differing types of music, from classical music to jazz music to country music, it is the rhythm that we think of first. It is the rhythm that continues to play in our minds long after the music has stopped. One of the advantages of the viola is its versatility in that it can be part of a traditional orchestra or a part of a jazz band.

The fact that it is difficult to play is recognised by all musicians, and this makes it doubly difficult for the beginner. The opportunities are limited and music teachers are hard to find except in reputable music schools. This, of course, means that there are fewer people who want to learn it and fewer teachers filling in that need.

Nothing is impossible, however, and if you have set your heart on learning the viola it is a good idea to begin with reading. Search out everything you can find on the viola, also known as a mandolin, and absorb it. To become more proficient at anything, we have to invest time. You have to be prepared to practice, practice and practice some more.

The viola is a similar shape to the violin, but there the likeness ends. They are entirely different to play. The violin is an excellent solo instrument, not so the viola. It bears more similarity to the cello in that it is more of a back up or supportive instrument. It weaves its sound into the overall whole of the music and, as such, is quite a subtle instrument.

So, remember, it is quite within anyone's reach to play the viola. It is difficult, but not impossible, to find someone who will be willing to teach you. There are teachers available who don't specialise in the viola, but who are excellent music teachers, and these still can be off assistance. Finally, it is also advisable to take someone with you who has a musical background when you are ready to purchase your viola. There are various types and different sounds to take into account.
